Reverse Engineering Nylon Gear

Our client approached us requesting to see if it would be possible to re-create a complex gear from a 1961 Aristocrat Starlite slot machine. As you can see from the photo below, the gear is heavily damaged and even missing some teeth.

After carrying out some accurate measurements and 2D image scans, we were able to use CAD to produce a replica 3D model - ready for 3D Printing.

The original gear was made using an injection moulding process. To reproduce this gear using injection moulding would cost thousands in setup costs alone. 3D printing technology allows us to create products fast, high quality and cost-effective. The material used originally is Nylon, and we are able to 3D print this material. Nylon offers high strength and abrasion resistance - perfect for moving parts like gears.

The 3D printed gear is identical to the original part - with the teeth fixed of course.
